NEW YORK – My Word is My Bond (published by iUniverse) by Paul Weinberg delves into the hardships and history of turn of the century immigrants, Jewish cultural values and the phenomenon of anti-Semitism through the eyes of the author’s family.

More than just a family history, My Word is My Bond is an introduction into Jewish life starting in Poland in the late 1700s but then coming across the Atlantic Ocean to find a new home in America and New York City. The life that they chose was overwhelming as they were forced to leave their family, friends, lifestyle, food, culture and language behind for new hope.

Weinberg’s mother, Dorothy, was the daughter of parents who immigrated to the United States and his story tells very descriptively how they came to live in one of the largest cities in the world. But we also learn about the uphill climb that a Jewish man faced in the workplace as Weinberg’s father dealt with co-workers who hated his intellect and the fact that he was Jewish.

When their sons are born, Dorothy makes sure that her boys learn the history of the Torah and keep up with Jewish traditions that have been handed down from family members throughout the generations. In the sixth chapter, Memories and Lessons, Weinberg includes stories and letters from others close to his family, which helps the readers understand even more about them. He also includes family photos throughout the book that capture who they are.

As in the prologue:
As he took my hand and led me into the bedroom, he said something I’ll never forget.
“My word is my bond.”
“What does that mean, Dad?”
Tucking me into bed and turning off the light, he said, “People can steal your money, and people can take your possessions, and people can take all you own. There is one thing that no one can take from you; that is your good word. When you make a promise, never break it. Your word is your bond. MY WORD IS MY BOND.”
