April 24, 2009 - PRLog -- Classic Cars For a Modern Age, an icon returns- The Camaro is back !

After a gap of some seven years the Camaro is back, arriving in showrooms all over the USA this month! The Camaro was introduced by GM in 1967 and it continued for the next thirty-five years, until it was dropped from the line-up in 2002. The new Camaro is back, production started in March as a 2010 model year vehicle, launching in the Spring of 2009,  the lucky few have already taken delivery of their cars.

The return of the Camaro name has been eagerly anticipated by enthusiasts since production of the fourth generation ended in 2002. The first official word regarding a fifth generation Camaro from General Motors came in January 2006 at the North American International Auto Show where the 2006 Camaro Concept was released.  Auto Week editors unanimously awarded the Camaro Concept "Best In Show."

The Camaro is available in LS, LT, and SS trim levels. The LS and LT trim levels will be powered by the 3.6LV6 producing 300 bhp @ 6,400 rpm and 273 lb ft torque @ 5,200 rpm. The SS with manual transmission is powered by the 6.2L V8 LS3 producing 422 bhp @ 5,000 rpm and 408 ft·lb of torque @ 4,500 rpm while the SS with a six–speed automatic transmission featuring steering wheel mounted TAPshift is powered by a new variant of the LS3 which produces 400 bhp @ 5,000 rpm with 395 lb ft of torque @ 4,500 rpm. This new L99 V8 uses Active Fuel Management which enables the engine to run on only four cylinders during light driving conditions, such as highway cruising, to improve fuel economy.

The production car features the Classic layout of the Camaro coupe with 2-doors, 4-passenger seats and rear-wheel drive. The new car features four-wheel independent suspension system, four-wheel disc brakes with 14” rotors and four-piston calipers, 18” wheels are standard fit on the LS and LT while 20” wheels are standard on the SS.

Other features include variable-rate power steering, four-wheel disc brake systems standard on all models (four-piston Brembo calipers on SS models), a StabiliTrak electronic stability traction control system with competitive/sport modes offered on SS models, launch control on SS models equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, and six standard air bags that include head curtain side-impact air bags and front seat-mounted side air bags. An RS appearance package is available on LT and SS trim levels which include HID headlamps with integrated halo rings, spoiler, and RS-specific taillamps and wheels.
