By: South Nassau Communities Hospital “Dr. Buhl is one of the foremost clinicians in this region in the field of gynecologic oncology,” said Rajiv Datta, M.D., Medical Director of the Cancer Program and Chairman, Department of Surgery; at South Nassau. “We are pleased to have a physician of her caliber directing our Gynecologic Oncology Program and providing the women of South Shore communities with the compassionate care and expertise they need if they are diagnosed with a cancerous or non-cancerous conditions of the female reproductive system.” According to the Women’s Cancer Network, recent reports generated in the United States and internationally have documented the superiority of surgical staging and overall survival of women in early and advanced stages of ovarian cancer when the surgery or treatment is performed by a gynecologic oncologist. Dr. Buhl utilizes minimally invasive approaches to diagnose and treat early-stage, advanced, or recurrent gynecologic cancers as well as non-malignant gynecologic conditions. An article published in the December 2008 edition of The Oncologist entitled the “Role of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Gynecologic Cancers,” concluded that minimally invasive surgery can be a suitable alternative in the surgical management of gynecologic malignancies and that the smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, and shorter hospital stays are welcomed by women. Dr. Buhl is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the prestigious State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center at Stony Brook. She has served as a co-investigator of numerous studies and co-authored clinical papers that have been published in a variety of prestigious journals. A graduate of Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT, with a double-major Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Government, Dr. Buhl earned her medical degree from New York Medical College, Valhalla, NY, in 1993. After earning her medical degree, Dr. Buhl completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and a fellowship with the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn Downstate Medical Center.
