April 7, 2009 - PRLog -- Hartford, CT - This month, Sportsin140.com, a new sports and social media blog, releases its Sports on Twitter database of more than 200 validated Twitter accounts belonging to professional athletes, teams, colleges, universities, sports media members and sports bloggers that use Twitter to interact with their fans and a global audience.

-National Hockey League (NHL)
-NASCAR

-Colleges & universities

Also featured are national outlets like ESPN, Fox Sports and Yahoo Sports; regional media like NESN and Fox Sports Arizona; and beat writers from all across the United States. Sports on Twitter also includes sports bloggers who deliver updates on their favorite teams each week.

"Sports and Twitter are natural partners," Sportsin140.com creator Brendan Wilhide says. "As more and more professional athletes and teams join Twitter, fans are finding new ways to interact with their favorite sports stars and teams are recognizing that Twitter enables them to reach thousands of fans at no additional cost."

As Twitter soars in popularity, it is becoming more and more difficult to tell the legitimate accounts from the fake ones. "I personally validate every account using a number of criteria," Wilhide says, "including contacting the athlete's team or organization, contacting the athlete directly or by checking to see if an already validated account vouches for the account in question."

Fans can follow @sportslist on Twitter for the latest updates to the Sports on Twitter database.

Twitter.com is a social networking and "micro-blogging" website which enables users to write short messages to each other. Nielsen Online reported web traffic to Twitter.com grew 1,382 percent from February 2008 to February 2009, a statistic which caused Nielsen to call Twitter "an important part of brand marketing" in a recent published report .

About Sportsin140.com:

Sportsin140.com is a blog dedicated to profiling professional, college and Olympic athletes on the Sports on Twitter list. I created the Sports on Twitter list as a resource for all sports fans on Twitter. The list contains over 200 professional athletes, teams, leagues, media members, sports bloggers and fantasy sports players that use Twitter to interact with their fans and a worldwide audience. I validate all accounts personally as time permits in order to ensure the integrity of the list.

Sportsin140.com acts as an extension to that list. I write about sports on Twitter and highlight ways the sports industry is utilizing Twitter and social media to reach new audiences each week. I write original posts and link to other blogs discussing the sports industry and technology.
