March Jobless Rate Up to 8.5 Percent, What People Need to Do

The nation's unemployment rate jumped to 8.5% in March. That's the highest unemployment rate since late 1983. If you are looking for a job, the best time to get started is now.

April 3, 2009 - PRLog -- "If you are looking for a job, the best time to get started is now," says Alan Leon, President of DHResumes.com. This March employers cut 663,000 people from jobs, driving the U.S. unemployment rate to 8.5%. That's the highest since late 1983 and according to the Labor Department's report issued on April 3, 2009: if part-time and discouraged workers were factored in, the unemployment rate would have been 15.6% in March. What makes Mr. Leon say now is good?

Leon explains,"The job market is what it is. There are a lot of people looking for jobs, but trying to wait it out and trying to enter when the surplus has thinned out may take considerable time. In ordinary conditions, getting a job may take weeks or months. Now with the shakeout that we are seeing, the old rule of thumb is out the window. Search, response and hiring times are getting longer, so it is better to get started earlier rather than later. By getting started earlier, you give yourself a better chance of being seen, getting on file or being asked to interview. You also provide yourself with more practice in interviewing and networking. These things greatly benefit you, and they can shorten your search time overall."

The old rule of thumb that Mr. Leon refers to looks something like this -

Expect 1 - 2 months searching and applying when looking for a $20K job. Add 1 month for searching for every $10K in salary above $50K.

"You've got to take the bull by the horns. You are looking and so are other people. The playing field starts out even. Look hard for the jobs that fit you and your skills, and then research and apply to them. You have to have faith and you need to do it," says Mr. Leon.

While some analysts predict improvement by the end of 2009's fourth quarter, others have a more extended time line for recovery.
