April 2, 2009 - PRLog -- On Monday, May 4, 2009, Community Music Center (CMC) will celebrate its 88th birthday at San Francisco’s newest cabaret, the dazzling Rrazz Room at the Hotel Nikko. A Salute to the Joy of Making Music, CMC’s annual fundraiser, supports scholarships for low-income youth.

The Music Center’s honored guest is a violinist in the CMC String Orchestra, Remo Del Tredici, who started the school year at 88 years old. Longtime CMC supporters and patrons of the arts Nelson and Diana Wild head the Event Committee.

The year Community Music Center first opened its doors was 1921: a time of prohibition, speakeasies, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Harlem Renaissance. The war to end all wars had just been won and the Great Depression was still nearly a decade away. In the 88 years since then, CMC has made music possible for everybody in its ever-changing community who has wanted to learn.

Community Music Center’s 88th birthday will be celebrated with fine wines, an array of appetizers, and a birthday cake. Auction prizes will feature exciting travel packages, food and wine, and, of course, music!  Cabaret and jazz vocalist Wesla Whitfield will headline along with her husband, pianist Mike Greensill, who has promised to play all 88 keys that evening. CMC students will give a special performance and KPIX reporter Mike Sugerman will emcee the event.
