17 yr old New Zealander Levi Sherwood becomes youngest ever to win Red Bull X Fighters in Mexico

March 28, 2009 - PRLog -- 17-year-old Levi Sherwood from Palmerston North in New Zealand, tonight, won the first round of the Red Bull X-Fighters, held in a magnificent old bull-fighting arena in Mexico City.

In his first major international contest, Sherwood went head to head with reigning 2008 X-Fighters champion Mat Rebeaud of Switzerland in the semi finals and emerged victorious.

Sherwood impressed every single spectator in the 43,000 strong Plaza de Toros` with his insane extension and one-of-a-kind style.

Tonight, Sherwood made Freestyle Motocross history, as the youngest rider to win a Red Bull X-Fighters event, taking out 30-year-old Japanese rider Eigo Sato in the Final.

Sherwood was a late inclusion and only found out a week ago he was to replace Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg of the USA.

In California training at the Red Bull Compound with 2008 Red Bull X Fighters Mat Rebeaud, Sherwood had recently finished a nine show tour of New Zealand with the world famous Crusty Demons.

Having no expectations going into the contest Sherwood was humbled to be invited to such a prestigious event.

A small crash in the final practice going into the night did not seem to faze him nor being the only rider to be on a four stroke Kawasaki up in Mexico’s high altitudes, where bikes don’t run at their optimum due to thin air and pollution.

Sherwood will be in the states for a further two weeks attending to media commitments, before returning to Australia to be part of the Crusty Demons ‘Beyond the Apocalypse’ national tour.

The Red Bull X Fighters series is held over five rounds in five countries including Mexico, Canada, Texas, Spain and London for the series finale.

Sherwood lives and trains on the Gold Coast of Australia with his father David Sherwood, who was on hand to see his son take the amazing win.
