Tolani Maritime Institute, Induri, Pune organises Technology Festival -TRANSTECH 2009

The global maritime industry has to undergo the technological changes in propulsion, fuels, controls and materials. The industry has to adapt new philosophies to be in the competitive business.

March 25, 2009 - PRLog -- The extravaganza TRANSTECH- 2009 discussing ‘Recent Trends in Transportation Sector’ concluded at Tolani Maritime Institute on March 21, 2009. It was a marathon event with over 100 participating cadets and 40 papers on various issues pertaining to the above theme. A variety of topics like ship design, propulsion, alternative fuels, IC Engines, Materials etc were discussed during the above conference. Five invited talks by eminent academicians and professionals made the event a wonderful learning opportunity. The event started with a wonderful video film by cadets and opening remarks by Mr. SK Srivastava, Organizing Secretary of the event. Prof. BK Saxena, Principal TMI, iterated TRANSTECH-2009 to be a wonderful learning as well friendship making opportunity for the cadets. Prof. Indrakumar Basu, Programme Chair, Marine Engineering, TMI, was the Convener of the event.
Mr. Ganapathy Varadaraj, Country Manager (India and Srilanka), Lloyd’s Register Asia, Mumbai was the Chief Guest for the occasion. He deliberated on burning issues for the global maritime sector with special reference to climate change. The speech was very appropriate for the occasion. He discussed various energy saving techniques for shipping sector. As advocated by the Inter-governmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), Clean Development Mechanism is going to be part of global maritime sector and a new business opportunity.
Prof. PK Mishra, Professor Emeritus of College of Engineering, Pune and formerly a professor at IIT, Kharagpur enlightened the audience with laser machining techniques. He presented his multi-functional laser machine for the benefit for manufacturing sector. The maritime sector is looking for such innovations and confluence of technologies. The talk by Mr. Kiran Patil, Senior Executive, Crompton Grives Ltd, Nasik, presented the latest developments in medium voltage switchgears with case studies approach. The evening of first day of TRANSTECH 2009 was made memorable by the melodious Santoor and Tabla play by Dr. Dhananjay Daithankar of SPIC-MACAY. Prof. VS Raja, Professor, IIT, Mumbai explained the basics of corrosion and presented the 5M model for corrosion mitigation for ships. Prof. SC Mishra, Director, IMU, Visakhapattanam presented his invited talk on Hull Propeller Interaction. He explained the fluid dynamics of a ship structure. He nicely presented the flow modeling of a back propeller ship. Capt. Dinesh Gautama, GM, Sea Consortium, presented the latest overview of Indian Maritime Sector and discussed commercial aspects of shipping industry with latest statistics. Needless to say that invited talks took the delegates in a state of euphoria and made TRANSTECH- 2009 a wonderful learning experience.
The event  by managed by TMI faculty (Prof. Syamalendu Gupta, Capt. Manoj Hirkane, Capt. Krishnamurthy Iyer, Mr. Arun Mahajan, Dr. Sanjeet Kanungo, Cmdr. Sukanta Dasgupta, Mr. Naresh Mishra) as session chairs and cadets as session coordinators. The eminent panel of judges (Dr. SG Dixit, Dr. RB Ingle, Mr. Sunil Ogale, Mr. AR Chitnis, and Mr. Anant .Sahastrabuddhe) was appointed to judge the competition. Ms. Puja Awachat and Ms. Anjali Deshpande coordinated opening and closing sessions. Dr. SD Pohekar presented the summary of the sessions.The event concluded with Prof. BR Natarajan, Dean Distance Learning Programmes Division, BITS, Pilani as a Chief Guest. Students took the presentations in extremely competitive mood which made the event a lively one. The question-answer sessions were exhaustive. The prizes for poster competition on safety were also given in the concluding sessions. Cadet Adnan Ahmed and Cadet Ankit Ahuja of Tolani Maritime Institute, Induri, Pune bagged the first prize. Cadet. Jasveet Kaur of AMET University, Chennai bagged the second prize. Mr.Karan Parmar and Mr. Amit Parab of KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai  bagged the third prize. A consolation prize was also given to Cadet Jose Thomas and Cadet Parvesh Sharma of Samudra Institute of Maritime Studies, Lonawala. TRANSTECH- 2009 was really a professional oriented gathering and a new educational experience.
