March 16, 2009 - PRLog -- The Data Governance & Stewardship Community of Practice (DGS-COP) will host a free 'Meet the Expert' teleconference, Friday, March 20, 2009, beginning at 11:00 AM EDT. This one-hour teleconference will feature EW Solutions' Anne Marie Smith, PhD presenting "Incorporating a Governance Approach into your Methodology." ' This event will be free to both members and non-members.

Smith will lead a discussion that will focus on that while an increasing number of companies have become aware of the benefits of implementing Data Governance principles, many organizations struggle with implementing a Data Governance approach into an existing application development or maintenance methodology.  She will explore how to realize benefits of greater data consistency, which can include more and better usage; a reduction in semantic errors and an enhanced return on data management investments by incorporating the practices of Data Governance into an existing development methodology.

"Data Governance should not be a 'bolt-on' activity," says Data Governance Institute President Gwen Thomas, who will be introducing Smith. "Rather, decision rights, accountabilities, controls, rules, and other governance mechanisms should be baked into operational processes, project management practices, and system development methodologies. Anne Marie Smith is a global expert on integrating governance into processes and methodologies, with many years of experience from both academic and practitioner perspectives. We're delighted that she's sharing her learnings with us."

This event is one of the DGS-COP "Meet the Expert" series. These are monthly events, held either in a web presentation format or a teleconference interactive discussion and featuring recognized industry experts speaking on different Data Governance-related topics. These events are open to the public, but advance registration is required. Interested parties should go to DataStewardship.com, click on the 'Event Calendar' link, then select the  "Incorporating a Governance Approach into your Methodology" field on the calendar. Additional information, as well as instructions to register will be available.
