March 14, 2009 - PRLog -- MRSA and its continued growth in astonishing numbers is causing hospitals to take an aggressive approach in preventing and trying to contain the spread of this resilient infection.  When statistics mention that 2 million patients have developed this infection while being treated in the hospital and 100,000 of them die because of this serious infection. I think it is genuinely shocking to just about any individual to hear these statistics.

The CDC (Center of Disease Control) indicates that the rate of infections that are antimicrobial resistant has been growing annually.  In 1974 MRSA infections accounted for only 2% of the total number of staph infections. In 1995 it was 22% and in 2004 it was an astonishing 63%.  Antibiotic resistant bacteria is found in all wards throughout most hospitals and MRSA infections are 8.6 times more prevalent than according to previously thought estimates according to a report issued by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control.

Studies have shown that a good number of the population 30-50% carries MRSA on their bodies. It is also a known fact that MRSA can coexist on the surface of the skin without generating any  significant health complications. The bacteria becomes harmful when it penetrates the skin by wound or puncture and that is when the dreadful complications begin.

Although alarming, the fact is that MRSA continues infecting our communities even though there are alternative treatments and roads to resolution.  There is a special type of mono-floral honey indigenous to New Zealand and other parts of Australia called Manuka Honey, and it has proven to be remarkably efficient at exterminating this extremely resilient bacterium.  It is the Manuka bush's nectar in the flowers that is special; not so much the bee's themselves.  The nectar is unique in regards to its amazing antibacterial properties that the bee's use to create this extraordinary honey.

Manuka Honey continues to grow and gain more notoriety because it contains awesome healing properties that are not to be found in other types of honey. The Bacterial Cell is effected by the Manuka Honey as the moisture is drawn out making the bacteria incapable of surviving. I have heard it being compared to the results of pouring salt on a slug.

One of the most wonderful things about honey is it does not expire.  Bacteria does not have the ability to survive in honey like when food spoils due to bacteria forming on it.  Honey has been found in Ancient Tombs that were 4,000 years old, and the honey was still considered suitable for consumption.  Wounds were often dressed in honey and it was used frequently for medicinal  purposes. The fact is that bacteria was unable to survive in honey due to its natural hydrogen peroxide content.

There is a (UMF) or (Unique Manuka Factor) 0-30 Rating scale used to calcualte the potency of Manuka Honey.  Anything higher than (UMF) 10 is considered applicable in regards to therapeutic use. Although there has been reports of sensitivity for some patients when using (UMF) 20-30 Manuka Honey, it has been conveyed that (UMF) 10+ is adequate in healing staph infections and killing MRSA.

It has been discovered that MRSA cells divide into seperate cells every 30 minutes due to the cell forming a septum down the middle.  One of the most amazing discoveries in the medical industry is Manuka Honey inhibits the cell division process leaving the bacteria dead in its tracks.

Manuka Honey is now being used as a main component in antiseptic products.  Considering the fact that it has the ability to successfully annihilate antibiotic resistant bacteria's like MRSA and is one of the only natural substances in the world that can achieve it, why wouldn't it be utilized by companies that are in the business of manufacturing skin care products? There is a New York based company known as Honeymark that has investigated and utilized Manuka Honey's useful and effective antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.  Their continued growth in the industry will continue with their absolutely incredible First Aid Antiseptic Lotion for treatment of MRSA and other Bacterial infections. They also offer an Anti-MRSA Kit that contains their First aid Antiseptic Lotion, Hand Sanitizing Gel that is Alcohol Free and doesn't dry out skin, Antiseptic Spray, Antimicrobial Liquid Hand Soap, and Active Manuka Honey (UMF) 16+.  All of these products work great because they contain one of nature's most wonderful gifts Manuka Honey.
