Helping Americas Homeless Veterans

March 5, 2009 - PRLog -- WASHINGTON DC - A much needed homeless shelter is planned for Birmingham, AL.  As part of the ongoing effort to meet the needs of thousands of homeless veterans in the United States - “Three Hots and A Cot” is planning a homeless shelter for Birmingham, AL
    A recent report from The Urban Institute, in conjunction with the National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients (NSHAPC),  projected that each year, 2.3 million to 3.5 million people experience homelessness in America. Their survey found that 23 percent of all homeless persons – and 33 percent of all homeless men – are veterans. That would indicate there are between 529,000 and 840,000 veterans who are homeless at some time during the year.
    “Three Hots and A Cot” is currently fundraising to establish a homeless shelter in Birmingham, AL to open by late summer 2009.  Working with the Veterans Administration and with other community groups, the homeless shelter will be more than a place to sleep.  The facility will offer employment services, provide clothing, access to medical and dental care, provide spaces for group support meetings, offer transportation for medical needs and job searches, meals and other services as needed.  The facility will also provide laundry and shower services daily for all veterans.  Three meals will be served daily to residents of the home - lunch will be available to all homeless daily at the center.
     Rising unemployment, current economic conditions, and increased number of veterans coming home is swelling the ranks of the homeless.  Three Hots and A Cot will provide the basic needs for homeless veterans as they receive the assistance they need to transition to an independent life.
