Feb. 25, 2009 - PRLog -- Louisville, Colo. — Citron WorkSpaces (www.citronworkspaces.com), Colorado’s environmentally focused office furniture resource partner, is pleased to announce its sponsorship of a free online “materials exchange” community, FACILITYcycle.com, designed to reduce, reuse and recycle facilities waste. FACILITYcycle is designed to help business owners, facilities managers, real estate professionals and others help keep old facilities “stuff” like furniture, equipment, building materials and more, out of landfills.

At www.FacilityCycle.com, visitors can create a free account and log in to sell or trade used items to other businesses; find and buy used furniture and equipment; donate used items to non-profits, startups, and other organizations with limited budgets; or find reliable, qualified local recyclers. The program provides a sustainable way to recycle and reuse “stuff,” either helping those who aren’t able to invest funds to purchase new items, or making sure materials are recycled and not dumped into landfills.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver (www.bgcmd.org) is a grateful beneficiary of the FACILITYcycle.com furniture recycling program. Through this program and Citron WorkSpaces, the organization obtained donated items, including bookshelves to rebuild the library at a club; office supplies; ergonomic and conference room seating; and modular furniture components to build five workstations for administrative staff. According to a representative from the non-profit, “In tough economic times, companies may find it difficult to donate cash. They can still positively impact non-profit organizations by donating surplus furniture and supplies. Everything we received was in good condition. The work stations we built look great and function well ergonomically.”

FACILITYcycle was originally conceived as a way to address a relatively unpublicized problem in the business community: furniture disposal. Each year, when businesses shut down or upgrade their furniture, the majority of discarded product becomes part of the more than 8.8 million tons of landfill waste created by used furniture, cubicles, equipment, and other materials being thrown in the trash.

In the process of researching ways to address this issue, it became clear that furniture is only part of the problem – everything it takes to outfit and operate a facility is something that might end up in a landfill, if it is not reused or recycled. As a result, FACILITYcycle.com was created to allow users to donate, trade, buy or sell almost anything related to running a business. The site allows users to post ads for all kinds of used products, including complete workstations, flooring and other building materials, photocopiers, HVAC equipment, and even forklifts. Users can also connect with others who need their professional expertise in architecture, LEED consulting, building maintenance and much more. And it is entirely free.

Kathey Pear, founder of Citron WorkSpaces, says, “Our job has always been to create new work environments for businesses throughout our region. But what we’ve found is that our clients, and many others, also want a resource for disposing of the furniture and other items that they no longer need. Throwing it all in the garbage isn’t a good option. And the reality is that, while the furniture they have may not be exactly what they want anymore, it can still be useful to someone else. FACILITYcycle connects used items with those who need them.” The program is currently geared toward Colorado users, but FACILITYcycle plans to expand to other regions in the future.

FACILITYcycle.com was developed and is managed by Your Business Edge (www.yourbusinessedge.biz). Partnerships are in development with the EPA’s WasteWise program (www.epa.gov), the U.S. Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org), and other groups concerned with keeping usable product from ending up in landfills. FACILITYcycle has already created partnerships with non-profit organizations that need assistance, and with local recyclers like All Recycling and EcoCycle that can help companies dispose of furniture that can’t be re-used in a more environmentally-friendly way. Pear’s hope is that FACILITYcycle will become the new, standard method for business to handle unused and unwanted materials for businesses throughout Colorado, and beyond.

“We believe that this is a simple and practical tool that is beneficial to everyone involved,” says Pear. “And the more people use it, the better it will become. And of course, usage is free!”
