Veganline.com's Jane shoe shown at London Fashion Week - at five times the price
Veganline.com sell a high heeled thigh boot called Jane for £80 plus delivery retail. London Fashion Week displayed the same boot from a more fashionable supplier at £182 wholesale.
"I'm flattered", said John Robertson of Veganline.com , "even though someone else was showing it, they were charging more so that's OK".
"I like shoes but there's not much choice in what we can get made in the UK."
"Trying to sell ethical footwear tends not to be fashionable. Buying shoes made in UK working conditions in small quantities is like hunting for treasure: you just get excited when a shoe is available. You don't worry too much what it looks like".
"I was a bit embarrassed to put the boot on my website and £80 - shoes shouldn't cost that much - so I kept the margin as low as I could".
The boot on display costs £182 wholesale plus VAT, likely to sell to retail customers at more than double. It was mainly there to formed a backdrop to a stand showing garments made from the wool of rescued goats and sheep kept in an animal sanctuary.
"Usually they wear rubber wellies at their fashion shows", says John, "but I suppose they had to show something more than wool to get an invite to London Fashion Week.
London Fashion Week is paid for by taxpayers through UK Trade and Investment and the London Development Agency. Exhibitors are selected by the British Fashion Council.
