Feb. 20, 2009 - PRLog -- With the celebrity weight hype continuing and the influx of Americans at the gym based on their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, I ask you to consider the impact of eating disorders and their role in weight and body image issues in our culture. A perfect tie-in is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, February 22-28, 2009.

The mission of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is to ultimately prevent eating disorders and body image issues while reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment. Eating disorders are serious, life-threatening illnesses, often directly preceded by attempts at strict dieting. It's important to recognize the pressures, attitudes and behaviors that shape the disorder and how we might begin to make advancements in our understanding and treatment of this serious and escalating public health issue affecting females (and some males) of all ages.
