FDA Approves Hypoxico Equipment for Use in Cardiac Study

FDA says Hypoxico generators can be used in heart study to determine the effects hypoxic air has on chronic heart failure patients.

Feb. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- (NEW YORK, NY) - - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Hypoxico’s Everest Summit II Generator in a study being performed by Montefiore Medical Center.

The research study will test the effect of simulated altitude in people with chronic heart failure. In the study, cardiac patients will spend 3-4 hours per day in a Hypoxico altitude tent to determine the outcome of high altitude exposure on the heart.

“Beneficial changes occur during altitude exposure while the body is adapting to reduced oxygen content in blood,” says Dr. Maybaum, Medical Director of the Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapy at Montefiore Medical Center. “These changes are responsible for the improved exercise performance seen in athletes using this strategy.”

Participants in the study will be exposed to 10 altitude sessions over 22 days, where the amount of oxygen inside the Hypoxico tent will be adjusted slowly to mimic the amount of oxygen in the air at high altitudes. Physical examinations including blood analysis, echocardiograms, and skeletal muscle testing will be performed on the patients to determine the effects of simulated altitude exposure.

“Several changes occur in skeletal muscle in heart failure patients that leads to reduced ability to exercise,” says Dr. Maybaum. “The beneficial changes that occur in the blood, respiratory system and muscles during altitude adaptation with Hypoxico’s generators may very well be of great help to these patients.”
