Daylon Graphics Introduces Landshaper

Feb. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- Vancouver, B.C., Canada — Daylon Graphics® Ltd. today announced Daylon Landshaper™, a design/prototyping software application for landsite architects. Adding to  the features in its existing Leveller program, Landshaper is explicitly intended for the higher-end civil engineering market. It is also the basis of the more vertical Landshaper Golf, which is intended solely for golf course architects.

“Landshaper was inevitable.” explains Ray Gardener, Daylon's administrator. “As feature requests grew for Leveller and they were implemented, a rift occurred between power and simplicity. This happens to most software, and the choice ultimately boils down to having one product with everything, or multiple products that are a better fit to their respective audiences. From the code changes we did to make Leveller rebrandable for different resellers, plus some extra work, it became possible to fork the code and maintain different products.

“The other option was to break out various functionalities into libraries and sell those. But the worry there was that it would become a much larger maintenance issue, especially as we hope to address other operating systems down the road.”

Landshaper is based on the digital sandbox terrain modeling paradigm, where a heightfield is used to allow freeform terrain sculpting, visualization, and volume analysis in realtime. Arbitrary vector spline shapes can be used to model and texture the terrain.

“The natural feel of Landshaper makes it appeal to various people,” Gardener concludes, “such as the creative type of architect, a person starting a career in landsite engineering, or even the experienced engineer who prefers to focus on his/her job instead of constantly trying to fathom technical computer details. Now that computers are hitting a wall in terms of sheer hardware performance, the focus is shifting to making powerful, complex software friendlier, and that's what we want to bring to people.”
