Feb. 16, 2009 - PRLog -- This is an interesting mountain. Echoing Sand Mountain in Dunhuang city.

At times when the wind blows the hardest the entire mountain resounds with roaring echoes. It is a truly awe inspiring sight that is worth the 25 kilometer (15 mile) ride from the city of Dunhuang. This is, the Echoing-Sand Mountain (from the Chinese name “MingSha” Mountain), the named for the famous sounds the wind makes while blowing over its dunes.

All visitors to Dunhuang wish to climb the mountain (1715 meters, 5626 feet), but the ascent is difficult. For each step forward, one slides a half step back. In steep places, be prepared to use both your hands and feet. It is partially this challenge of climbing up a slippery slope that makes the trip so fun and full of laughter. On your way up, be sure to take the time to observe the sand carefully and you will notice that it has various colors such as pink, yellow, green, white, and black.

The Crescent Moon Spring, named after its unique moon-like shape, is located at the north foot of Echoing Sand Mountain, about 50 meters (164 feet) from north to south and 5 meters (16 feet) deep on an average. The spring water is sweet and crystal clear, and never gets covered up by drift sand. It also never overflows after long and heavy rain and dries up even after a long drought. Although the powerful windstorms that often hit the area stir up tons of sand and block out the sunlight, this too hasn’t adversely affected the spring. For hundreds of years it is has been a fixture of stability and calm, an oasis offering refreshment to all who come by.

At this unique spot, you can enjoy a rare view where an oasis meets the desert. Besides the wonderful scenery of the rolling dessert, a vibrant oasis of life, and the remarkable sunset, a number of exciting sand adventures are offered. Ride on a camel and imagine life as a traveler a thousand years ago on the Silk Road. Or try your hand at a more modern adventure with the new thrill sport “dune surfing” popularized here. The Echoing Sand Mountain has something for everyone.
