It was approved for use in food and beverages by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 1998. The FDA expanded the uses in 1999 as a “general purpose” sweetener. Derived from sugar by selectively substituting three atoms of the sugar molecule. This small change produces an amazing sweetener that has no calories, yet is 600 times sweeter than sugar!
