| Mix of humor and darkness fuels Knipschield's 'New Covey Cover Award' nominationAn Illinois pre-press printing specialist who worked on Michael's Jordan's 1998 book “For Love of the Game” has been nominated for a New Covey Cover Award for his work on D.L. Shiloh's 2008 satire “Pookoo.” Learn how to vote for this artist.
Knipschield', who hails from Freeport, Illinois, has over 20 years in the pre-press industry, as well as running PMK Creations. The book cover includes renderings of javelin thrower Katlin Hillmacher and Lenny the Lobster, a restaurant mascot. “The original concept was going to be something that was more abstract and have the shapes basic and flat,” Knipschield explained. “Even though the story talks about Chicago, I wanted to portray the city as dark with no detail.” Shiloh wanted a new take on a woodcut for “Pookoo”, which is a satire of “celebrity, Chicago and 6-foot lobsters." "He captured the loneliness, the darkness, the absurd humor and vastness of the big city," Shiloh said. "It totally fit the tone of the novel. Pete's touch included details like the billboard logo that has a 'K' with a screw. He deserves the nomination because it was a mix of the big picture, the little things and creatively going to a new place from what I wanted.” Fans of Knipschield's work on the “Pookoo” book cover can now get it on postcards, stamps, a poster and even a men's tie (http://www.zazzle.com/ So far, readers from 14 countries have downloaded the free PDF version of Pookoo. The free download of the novel is available from Shiloh's web site (http://www.dlshiloh.com) or the book's official site (http://www.pookoo.net). The revised version of the book is set to publish soon.
