Jan. 12, 2009 - PRLog -- Sickles Market, Little Silver, New Jersey, was featured as a role model to other specialty food markets in the December issue of the Gourmet Retailer, a popular national trade publication serving the specialty food and housewares industry. The magazine featured a cover photo of the third-generation owner Bob Sickles and his wife Leslie. Inside was an in-depth feature profile detailing the market’s secrets to success.
Sickles Market transformed from a seasonal farmstand to a viable year-round gourmet market http://www.sicklesmarket.com/topnav/food/grocery/index.htm
and garden center in 1998. Last year Sickles Market celebrated a century of retail business in the northern Jersey Shore region. The market is located on family ancestral property that dates back to a King’s Land Grant in 1663.
The Gourmet Retailer highlights Bob Sickles’ predilection for learning and sharing as part of his recipe for success. Additionally, the magazine cites Bob’s own hands-on, field-to-fork knowledge – planting, growing and harvesting – as specialized knowledge that is responsible for his reputation for carrying the very best produce (among other products) year round. Also high on the list for his reputation for success was Sickles’ team of knowledgeable staff members.
Editor Michelle Moran writes: “If you want to meet a grocer who can talk to you about farm-to-table product, there is no one truer to the mission than Bob Sickles and his family. For 300 years, http://www.sicklesmarket.com/leftnav/history/index.htm the Sickles family has farmed the soil of northern New Jersey, producing the best-quality crops to feed the local residents. Bob's father, at 81 years old, continues to grow blackberries, raspberries, tomatoes and other vegetables, as well as purchase from New Jersey farms that the family has dealt with for generations.”
The Gourmet Retailer article also highlights Sickles continual investment into improvements to his market as one of his secrets to success.
“Sickles' dedication to excellence continues to pay off,” Moran writes. “As he looks for new ways to build his business and keep his customers satisfied and shopping, Sickles is reinvesting in his store in spite of the current economic climate.”
Some improvements that Sickles made to the market in the past year were the installation of new deli cases for prepared foods http://www.sicklesmarket.com/topnav/catering/index.htm; the relocation and expansion of the cheese counter; the expansion of the butcher counter and the installation of a new meat case; the installation of a homemade fudge operation; and last but not least, the installation of a new generator to combat the many frustrating and costly blackouts occurring in the area. While the addition of a customer loyalty program helped to keep customers happy while providing added value to shopping at Sickles Market.
“We consider ourselves the purveyors of the 'good stuff.' Our job is to edit the product for our customers so that they can come and shop, have a great experience, and love what they are buying," the article quoted Sickles as saying. "I think the way forward in this economy is to constantly promote the value that is in the store,” the article added.
Sickles Market - celebrating 101 years in retail in 2009, is a third generation family-owned market and a trusted source for well-edited quality selections of produce, baked goods, gourmet grocery items, hand cut-to-order artisanal cheeses, prepared foods, cut flowers, a garden center, and a gift department.
