Collecting The Right Data

Despite its importance, a key concern with CSR reporting is gathering the data and information needed to create meaningful reports.

"One potential challenge is reporting systems - some systems may not be set up to capture the kind of data required," the IAG spokesperson explains.

Angela McQuillan, CEO of IT firm www.cintellate.com, agrees this can be tricky, particularly when it comes to collecting data to meet compliance requirements such as the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act (2007), or the Federal Government's proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.

"A properly designed system that can be implemented across an entire company and its various departments will soon be the standard for ASX-listed companies," she argues.

"Companies that move quickly to install proper CSR and carbon emission management systems will have a jump on their competitors as the regulatory landscape tightens and they will be able to use this to their advantage."
