Dec. 3, 2008 - PRLog -- The XOOPS Project, world’s leading Open Source CMS (Content Management System), has released recently the newest version of its award winning software – XOOPS 2.3.1.

In the first seven weeks this new release has been already downloaded more than 17,000 times, confirming the strong position of XOOPS in the CMS market.

XOOPS 2.3 is a major improvement for the XOOPS platform, as it merges two separate branches of XOOPS in preparation for its next major release – XOOPS 3.0. The most important features of the 2.3.1 release is the addition of Extended Profile and Private Messages modules, and standardizing on one Extended DHTML editor as the default across all XOOPS modules. The administrators will also enjoy the addition of a new Admin GUI.

XOOPS has been enjoying for years a very loyal following, thanks to its innovative nature and user friendliness, and receiving numerous awards from users and press. The main features are full modularization where modules can be installed/uninstalled/activated/deactivated with a mouse click, its versatile Group Permissions System, and a theme-based skinnable interface, where both admins and users can change the look of the entire website with just a click of a mouse. There are hundreds of themes and modules available for free download. With the most popular modules like News, Discussion Forums, Photo Galleries, Calendars, Jobs and Classifieds sections, Polls, Video presentations, it's very easy for anyone to set up a "Community Website". And since XOOPS is Open Source, the users can also contribute to the development.

Some of the other highlights of XOOPS are: Database-driven, personalization of individual users, multi-language capability, high security, web based admin with a friendly user interface, easy to translate into any language, excellent community support, local support around the world, use of other Open Source components, .

In the current economic downturn, Open Source software has become increasingly attractive to users and companies, as it helps them to save a lot of money.

System requirements

XOOPS is written 100% in PHP and requires a Web server, PHP and MySQL database:
