Nov. 24, 2008 - PRLog -- QuiltBlockLibrary.com offers free quilt block pattern and new video showing how to sew the Tic Tac Toe Quilt Block, a traditional patchwork 9 patch quilt block.

Since November 23 marks the beginning of Game and Puzzle Week, Penny Halgren, master quilt block maker, took the opportunity to demonstrate sewing a traditional patchwork quilt block in keeping with the theme.

“Tic Tac Toe was one of the first games I learned as a child. As soon as I could pick up a crayon, my dad taught me how to draw the circles and Xs in the 9 position grid that makes the Tic Tac Toe game.  Maybe that is where my love of 9 patch quilt blocks began,” mused Halgren.

The Tic Tac Toe Quilt Block is a fairly simple traditional patchwork quilt block to make, and, like many other quilt blocks, is known by other names. Using the same placement of dark and light color fabrics, Tic Tac Toe is also called Kitty Corner and Puss in the Corner. If you reverse the light and dark colors, it is also known as Blockhouse, which dates back to the 1930s.

The Tic Tac Toe is a relatively simple 9 patch pattern that can be made using some shortcut techniques which Halgren demonstrates in her video. Quilt block patterns are made by dividing the block into a grid with the same number of patches across as there are up and down.

Each patch can be further divided into triangles, smaller squares or rectangles. When a block has patches with rectangles, sometimes a quilter will sew longer strips together and then cut them into square patches, thus saving time in sewing and assuring the accuracy of the finished quilt block.

QuiltBlockLibrary.com is a resource for hundreds of quilt block patterns.  Each pattern comes in several different sizes. For example, most 9 patch quilt blocks are available with full size templates in 9, 12, and 18 inch block patterns.

Visit: www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com to view the demonstration of the Tic Tac Toe quilt block in addition to videos posted in the site Archives.  Free quilt block patterns are available for the quilt blocks demonstrated in each video.

The Tic Tac Toe pattern, plus hundreds of other traditional quilt block patterns and free Christmas fabric postcard patterns are available on the site.
