Nov. 24, 2008 - PRLog -- In author Marcia Calhoun Forecki’s Better Than Magic, a young woman at the brink of adolescence taps into her inner strength to overcome an adversary and in doing so, finds out amazing things about herself.

This fantasy set in modern day insightfully highlights the problems that young girls face as they mature.  Edith’s parents are controlling or “Moldums,” and Edith struggles to find herself.  Her best friend, Shellina has a free-thinking mother, a “Letum,” so Shellina is free to do as she pleases.  The two girls befriend a retired librarian whose home contains a treasure trove of used and unwanted books, and the girls find a second home pouring over the books.  Edith and Shellina have to deal with the librarian’s neighbor, Dante, a 7th grade bully who relentlessly teases them.

The girls find a magic mirror that gives them powers that can take all their problems away, but with great power comes great responsibility.  The mirror unleashes a power that neither see coming.  Something happens to the mirror and they’ve got to use all their wits, strength and faith in each other to defeat the troubles they’ve created and the ones that have troubled them in the past.

Will the girls overcome their adversary and learn how to tap into to their own power?

Forecki has a keen insight into the minds of young adolescents and her use of dialogue is spot on with creative and spontaneous humor.  This modern-day fantasy is more than entertainment—it is a significant and innovative portrayal of the problems that face our youth in a secular and fast-paced society.
