Projects Abroad and Prime Pump aim to improve water infrastructure in Jamaica

Nov. 13, 2008 - PRLog -- Wendy Tisdell, a volunteer with Projects Abroad in May 2008, is returning to Jamaica with her company in 2009 to help the New Hope Orphanage and McIntosh Primary School.  They will receive on the ground expertise from her company, Prime Pump, and manpower from Projects Abroad, a global volunteering organisation, to improve their water infrastructure.  The project aims to build a water storage system with an electric pump to carry the water to an ablution block.

The children at these institutions do not have reliable and sufficient water to meet their basic everyday needs. This project, therefore, addresses the critical areas of water and sanitation that will improve the lives of these children.

The project has set dates, 5th January – 4th February 2009 and would be ideal for individuals or school or university group.  Volunteers can be skilled or unskilled, however all volunteers need to be ready for a physical challenge!

Projects Abroad volunteer and Prime Pump Director Wendy Tisdell said “When I first visited Jamaica as a volunteer with Projects Abroad I really did not know what to expect.  After spending only a few days at my placement talking with community members and observing general conditions, my own background as a Director of a water and sewerage infrastructure company brought me to the realisation that I had a lot more to offer than simply a pair of hands and my time.  My business partner and I decided that our vast experience and expertise could be put to use by refurbishing or providing new water supply projects within education and health related areas in Jamaica.  My company has undertaken to sponsor and fund these projects in conjunction with Projects Abroad volunteers”.

Projects Abroad’s Director in Jamaica, Bridgette Barnett, is responsible for overseeing all projects in Mandeville.  She said “Volunteering with Projects Abroad can impact on your life so deeply that it moves you to continue in a worthwhile way to affect the lives of people in developing countries. This project is a clear example of this - Wendy spent three weeks in Jamaica in May 2008 and now she is determined to continue working with us.  It also clearly supports the vision of Projects Abroad to impact on the lives of people in a meaningful way, so I urge volunteers to come to Jamaica and help to make a difference in the lives of our children”.
