Nov. 13, 2008 - PRLog -- Medical tourism in Costa Rica is a fast growing business which attracts people from most developed countries like the US and Canada. There are various complicated reasons for the people of developed countries coming to developing countries for health care, but strictly speaking, it is because health care in developing countries is cheaper as compared with say health care in a country like USA. In 2007 an estimated 750,000 Americans left the US for romantic health care destinations like Costa Rica, India and Singapore seeking highly cost effective medical and health care alternatives.
Ed Mercer, a Canadian by birth also came to Costa Rica many years back along with his wife. However, enchanted by the beauty and grace of this country, he decided to make it his home. Although through the years Ed has established himself as one of the largest real estate developers of the country, he has seen hard days in his earlier years. But, with resilience and intelligent initiatives, Ed left the hard days behind and moved ahead in life to achieve heights which are difficult to reach for many. In history of mankind one can find great men like Ed Mercer who by their natural self become the sign posts for humanity to move on to a more humane and healthy future.
It is said that Ed Mercer came to Costa Rica as a guest and to watch the Iron Man competition.  In earlier years, Ed Mercer won the Golden Glove kickboxing championship. Like Julius Caesar, Ed came, saw and conquered. Rather, the beauty and potential opportunities of Costa Rica conquered the heart and soul of Ed Mercer and Ed stayed on in Costa Rica. Today, he is fondly known as Mr. Costa Rica for his efforts towards the betterment of this country. In contemporary history, Costa Rica is synonymous with Ed Mercer.
During his years in Costa Rica, Ed observed that as in many developing countries, the children of Costa Rica also had to walk a long distance to go to school as no proper roads and no transport facilities were available. That was when Ed Mercer started to develop infrastructure facilities in Costa Rica and provided the kids the means to reach their destination. Ed ventured into the land procuring and developing business and soon became one of the largest builders and land owners in Costa Rica. Ed also started his own real estate company and he saw to it that the projects did not harm the environment in any way and are eco friendly to the core.
Ed. Mercer’s initiatives to be eco friendly and his environmental protection acts and his wild life protection initiative towards the Scarlet Macaws, white faced monkeys and sea turtles got him recognition around the world.  Recently Ed Mercer was inducted into the Environmental Hall of Fame in Los Angeles for these efforts.
Ed. Mercer’s initiatives and concerted efforts at developing infrastructure at affordable cost and protection of environment all through is the reason that medical tourism is growing day by day. And as the infrastructure develops further Costa Rica can expect more percentage of medical tourists making it their destination. The two main reasons that prompt people to come to Costa Rica for health care are the affordability and accessibility.
In the developed countries health care is very expensive if you are not insured. Even after being insured on many occasions for certain treatments and health care there is a long waiting list. Many people cannot afford to wait that long and search for alternate places. And there they find Costa Rica as the most suitable place which is both affordable and enjoyable.
The health care and medical treatment centers in the developing countries like Costa Rica are very accessible and the people who come to Costa Rica for this purpose can easily reach the needed professionals and centers with a single phone call and get started with the treatment at a cost which is generally 40 to 60 percent less in comparison to their homeland.
