Nov. 13, 2008 - PRLog -- The small tropical country of Costa Rica in Central America boasts of diverse flora and fauna, a biodiversity which is even greater than North America or Europe. The forests of Costa Rica are treasures containing some of the rarest species of wild animals and birds and some of the least known plants. The varied flora of this region ranges from rainforests to cloud forests and the fauna speaks of a magnificent wildlife.

One of the names that have become inseparable from the wildlife of Costa Rica is Ed Mercer. Ed Mercer – the great environmentalist has played a major role in saving the endangered wildlife and breathing fresh new life into the forests of Costa Rica. Praised for his excellent services as a dedicated environmentalist, Ed Mercer made pioneering efforts in saving the wild animals and birds on the verge of extinction. He even established his own enterprise named Edward R. Mercer Foundation which is dedicated to conserve the ecology of the planet and spread awareness on it.

Always committed towards nature conservation and preserving biodiversity of the forests of Costa Rica, Ed Mercer made a mark as an environmentalist for all times to come. One of the best examples of Ed Mercer’s environmentalist nature comes from the fact that even during the development of his real estate projects he never disturbed the biodiversity of the nearby rainforest ecosystem. To top it, Ed Mercer made reforestation efforts to conserve nature. His unflinching moves to save the endangered wildlife took him to the Los Angeles’ Environmental Hall of Fame.

Ed Mercer played a pivotal role in saving the wild species like the white-faced monkeys, the scarlet macaws and the leatherback and ridley turtles. He had even called for protection in the area with 24 hours security. To trigger the growth of the macaw population Ed Mercer grew acres of almond tree plantations. This habitat also served for growth in the population of the monkeys and turtles got fresh beaches for nesting.

Ed Mercer also shared the spot light with the prominent ecological minds, environmentalists, ecological auto designers, inventors and companies. He believes that sharing the same stage with Tony Robbins, Donald Trump and Zig Ziglar became his inspiration to enrich others’ lives. Ed Mercer’s unparalleled efforts in the conservation of endangered wildlife not only increased their population but also checked poaching and illegal acts against animals.

Ed Mercer has been associated with the prestigious organizations like National Geographic, World Wildlife Fund, Audubon Society, Habit for Humanity and Greenpeace. Ed Mercer’s initiative and determined effort of conserving the forests and animals of Costa Rica fetched him world recognition, prestigious awards and fame.

The reason behind the lush forests and the diverse wildlife can be owed to the country’s strategic location, climatic makeup and distinct geographical features. The forests of Costa Rica have habitats which range from the lowland rainforest regions to the cloud forests. The tropical rivers and lakes make up the water bodies. It is interesting to note that even though the country’s landmass accounts for a mere a 0.1% of the world's total area, it constitutes 5% of the earth’s biodiversity.

25% of the Costa Rican land is dedicated to national parks and protected regions. The internationally famous Corcovado National Park is home to a large number of wildlife species including the tapirs and big cats. Tortuguero National Park serves as the habitat of diverse species of spiders, reptiles and howlers. The white-throated Capuchin monkeys and the three-toed sloth are also to be found here. Besides, the park is also the treasure home of 320 bird species. The Hawksbill, the Giant leatherback and the loggerhead turtles are also members of the forests here.

Preserving some 2,000 plant species is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It also preserves plenty of orchids. More than 400 species of birds can be spotted here and over a 100 mammal species. The forests in Costa Rica are home to some 800 different species of birds. The plant kingdom of Costa Rica boasts of 9000 different varieties of species.
