There are classic hot rods and there is the ‘32 Ford Roadster. To many, the ‘32 Ford Roadster is the definitive street rod and a must have for any serious collector. These were the cars that created the DNA for the muscle car, long before there were muscle cars. For over 50 years, the ‘32 Ford Roadster continues to be one of the most coveted cars to own and drive.

In the aftermath of the WWII, streets across America were teeming with war vets and pimple faced teens, cruising up and down the boulevard, out to show the world how fast and pretty their ride was. It was a time when any hard packed dessert flatland, desolate country road or a bustling highway, could be turned into the world’s fastest drag strip in a matter of minutes. Standing between two cars, a buxom bobby-soxer in a tight sweater and scarf was as good as any Christmas tree of starting lights. Ah, those were the days of innocence, where you could let it all out for a moment that lasted a quarter of a mile.

The ‘32 Ford Roadster was the car of choice for most hot rodder’s because it was affordable, easy to modify and parts were readily available. Junk yards were full of frames, bodies and engines that soon became the ingredients for the recipes that transformed the typical transportation of the time, into shiny, sleek classic street rods.

Owning and driving a ‘32 Ford Roadster is definitely an attention getter. The roaster’s mufflers spew out the sounds of horsepower as the open wheels hug the pavement. Cruising through town or on any highway, heads always turn as you pass by. Men want to drive it; women and kids want to ride in it.

This particular Red ‘32 Ford Roadster is anything but your grandfather’s old jalopy. This is a perfect example of what you can do when you add the best modern features to an automobile Icon. Dream machines aren’t created overnight. Fabrication for this car was started in 1985 by Henry Dana, then of the Dana Hot Rod Shop in Ft. Pierce Florida and took two years to complete. The Roadster was commissioned by a private car enthusiast with some pretty trick specifications. Dana didn’t waste a minute of the 24 months it took to create one of the ultimate street rods. Dana, now a fabricator for NASCAR’s Penske Racing, got it right creating an instant classic. Upon completion, the red ‘32 Ford Roadster appeared on the cover as the featured car for September 1987 edition of Rod Action Magazine.

It started with Progressive Automotive ’32 frame rails which were stretched four inches, providing a wheelbase of 110”, which allowed the many unique modifications that are found on this particular ‘32 Roadster. The rear was stepped up 4” for a lowered stance, while the front was “pinched” 5” to align with the body and hood lines. The extended 4” also moved the engine forward and allowed less tran-hump in the cockpit. The frame is also boxed with bracing necessary to support the 350 Chevy Turbo power-plant and 350 transmission.

The primary form of the roadster is a Westcott’s ’32 California Type fiberglass body w/filled cowl hidden hinges. The body has been fully smoothed to the finish of steel before being coated in Nancy Dana Red Lacquer. The only addition added is Dana’s hand manufactured lengthened three-piece metal hood, with hinges and latches that are fitted to the body and chassis. The outside mirrors and wind wings are from Big Al’s. The lighting consists of King Bee headlamps with slotted tail-lights for a subtle look. The removable cloth roof sewn in a garnet-red Rolls Royce material was created by Bobby Griffney, who also fashioned the Natural Red Leather with Tweed Burgundy pocketed bucket seats and rumble seat.
