Follow on Google News | Swansea Christmas Parade Dr Who InvasionThis year, Bonymaen Kids Initiative, chose the theme of a ‘Dr Who Swansea Christmas’ for their float at the Christmas Parade and Light Switch On.
By: City and County of Swansea This year the East Swansea community group chose the theme of a ‘Dr Who Swansea Christmas’, which will include a selection of the most gruesome and terrifying characters from the hit BBC television programme. With a little help from parents, children have been designing and making their own costumes through a series of after school workshops in preparation for the city event, which will see thousands of people take to the streets, as the Christmas celebrations in Swansea begin. Crowds can look forward to an invasion of Daleks and Cybermen, along with a scary snow-monster which children have been constructing for their unique float. Around 20-30 kids have been taking part in the project, aged between 5yrs and 12yrs, and all are very excited about being a part of this special festive event. Debbie Baker, co-ordinator from Bonymean Kids Initiative said, “The Dr Who theme was something that all the kids were really enthusiastic about and making the costumes and models has been a great deal of fun.” “Parents in the local community have also been helping out by donating any scrap material for us to use, in order to make our float the best in the parade.” The Wave and Swansea Sound will be awarding a fabulous prize of £1000 cash for the best decorated community float, along with £250 for the best walking procession. Photos of all the community groups will be taken throughout the parade and published in the Evening Post and on The Wave and City and County websites, allowing people to vote for their favourite. The community groups with the most votes will win the top cash prizes. The parade starts at 5pm from the Guildhall and joining the various floats and walking processions will be Father Christmas, who will be lighting up the streets as he passes through.
