Nov. 1, 2008 - PRLog -- Career In Massage Therapy
If you wish to make a career in massage training in BC, you must first undertake research on the rules and regulations for practicing massage in the province. British Columbia is one of the few provinces in Canada with education requirements and health care regulations overseeing massage therapists. The regulatory body for the profession of massage therapy is governed by the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia. Only its members can call themselves a "registered massage therapist" or any other description that implies that the person is registered with the College. To become a member you require a minimum 3,000 hours or approximately three years of training.

If you are practicing outside of the scope of the College in BC you are not regulated as such. But, you need to be certified in a particular massage therapy in BC. For instance, you can be a Shiatsu practitioner, certified Aromatherapist, Reflexologist, Relaxation massage therapist etc.

To be a certified massage therapist you need to attend a particular program or massage course in BC. Most massage therapy schools in BC provide their students with hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge, as well as provide you with material on ethics and standards of professionalism, and how to build a professional practice.

Choosing A Massage Therapy School
Before enrolling in one of the many massage schools in BC you must take time to answer questions like which massage technique(s) you want to try, whether you want to treat medical conditions or provide relaxation massage, whether you would like to work at a chiropractic office or health club or nursing home or fitness center etc.

Depending on the answers to these questions you can join an appropriate massage training centre in BC. There are some schools that focus on a science-based medical model, or therapeutic approach, whereas others teach relaxation massage and or spa massage training in BC. The practical component of some of these programs may include training in Swedish massage, chair massage, trigger point therapy, neuromuscular therapy, reflexology or sports massage. Other schools may offer an Eastern approach that includes modalities like Shiatsu, Acupressure, Reiki, or Thai Massage.

Your decision about the kind of massage therapy you wish to practice should be based on a number of factors like financial commitment, years of training, academic abilities, beliefs and values, and goals and aspirations.

BC’s massage schools provide both theoretical and practical coursework to give students a well-rounded massage education. You will be given numerous opportunities to work with actual patients, often including outreach and community.
