Oct. 26, 2008 - PRLog -- If you’re not familiar with what an “action puzzle” game is then the following list of some famous action puzzle games will make things clearer… Tetris, Bejeweled, Sokoban, Columns, Lights Out and The Same Game are all fine examples.

While it doesn’t hurt to have great graphics and sound, game play is at the heart of action puzzle games and, like great books, they have a timeless appeal.

Why choose the action puzzle genre? Being a family man I enjoy playing with my kids, and while, for example, first person shooters can be fun to play co-operatively I also want some of my game playing time to have some longer lasting benefits. By playing action puzzle games you still get the competitive element to get that elusive high score and beat your opponent but it also teaches your children elements of problem-solving and logical thought”, quoted Adrian Nelson, the founder of Hiscore Warrior.

With the launch of their first game, Blocks Away, which takes its concept from The Same Game, the basic idea is quite simple… try and remove all of the blocks from the screen. Sounds easy doesn't it - but you'd be wrong!

For a start you can only remove blocks of the same type if there are two or more next to each other, and the more blocks of the same type that you remove the higher they score. With skillful play you can really crank up your score.

There are three game modes with themed levels featuring blocks with special powers, and it is these special blocks that really make things interesting, some blocks cannot be moved but can be destroyed by a variety of special bomb blocks. Others are indestructible but can be moved out of the way using special blocks that can flip a row or column and yet another special block can add more blocks to your nearly cleared screen!

Pit your wits against the Standard game and see if you can progress to the higher levels of play. If you don't remove all of the blocks you can still continue to the next level if you reach the target score for that level. Remove all the blocks of one type for a bonus.

Raise your game and play in Countdown mode where you have limited time to make every move. If you take too long to move its game over - but on the plus side the target score is lower per level to give you a fighting chance!

When you're ready for the ultimate challenge try the arcade Survival mode which gets fast and furious as you try and stop the blocks building up to the top of the screen. Its not just quick reflexes though, with special blocks appearing you also need to think quickly to ensure that your score increases quicker than the increasing difficulty level.

What helps differentiate Blocks Away from other similar games is not only the different themed levels and modes of game play but that it provides a way to let both parents and their kids simultaneously be the champion of the game in different game modes. While parents (just) might be better at the unlimited time standard mode, the arcade survival mode requiring quick reflexes and quick thinking might just hand the hiscore crown to the kids.

Hiscore Warrior is keen to make games that have longevity and keeps players coming back for more and Blocks Away certainly has that “just one more go” feel about it. In fact, if you’re not careful, you’ll suddenly find you’ve been playing for several hours when you only meant to have a quick ten minutes – you have been warned!
