Oct. 3, 2008 - PRLog -- Real estate leaders from across the Southeast gathered last week at the 14th annual ULI Atlanta awards dinner to recognize outstanding projects and people receiving Development of Excellence awards. The Development of Excellence awards honor real estate legends and projects demonstrating Excellence in Development. The following projects were named Developments of Excellence: Athens Multi-modal Station, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, The Howard School and Pemberton Place/The World of Coca-Cola. In addition to the Development of Excellence awards, Project of the Year was awarded to Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and Serenbe received the first Sustainability Award.

Individual achievement awards were presented to local leaders that have dedicated their careers to elevating the industry and to improving Atlanta. The Frank Carter Community Achievement Award was presented to Harold Dawson, Sr. for his lifetime of exemplary contribution to the Atlanta community. The Dan Sweat Community Leadership Award was presented to Dr. Wayne Clough (former President of Georgia Institute of Technology and now Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution) and to Dr. Carl Patton (former President of Georgia State University), who lead their educational institutions' expansion and integration into their respective communities.

“Congratulations to all of the Development of Excellence awards winners and finalists,” said Jeff DuFresne, executive director of ULI Atlanta. “These innovative developments are excellent models of responsible land use and should be a source of pride not only for the development teams but also for Atlanta area residents, as these projects are quite extraordinary examples of the best in development.”

The criteria on which the projects were evaluated included the use of land, sustainability, creativity in organization/management, smart growth, innovation in design and architecture, filling a community need and providing a positive impact, having overcome obstacles in development and the use of public/private partnerships.

As a district council of the Urban Land Institute, ULI Atlanta advances responsible land use policy and real estate development practice throughout greater Atlanta. The nonprofit group is supported by its members.  They examine land use issues, impartially report their findings and convene forums to find solutions to complex land use problems.
