Sept. 27, 2008 - PRLog -- The policy calls for setting up a stand alone department for immigration and citizenship. The National's suggested new policy follows after the New Zealand Auditor General is in the process of carrying out a review of how immigration applications are being dealt with currently after some recent scandals.

The review comes amongst rumors that the staff at current immigration department are trying to keep up with processing the 45,000 immigration applications in the last financial year.

Part of the National Parties Immigration Policy includes a plan to attract wealthy foreigners to retire to New Zealand. The plan's retirement visa aimed at those wealthy retired migrants who are financial self suficient and will not be a burden on the taxpayer. National's spokesman on immigration, Lockwood Smith, said it was a "win-win" policy for New Zealand because it would attract more spending without any burden on taxpayers.

National's proposed Immigration Policy also included a "silver fern" visa. This visa allows people immigrating to New Zealand with New Zealand recognised tertiary qualifications to live in New Zealand for a while while job hunting. They would be given a 24 month visa and could be fast tracked for residency if they find permanent job with a salary above a specified threshold.

Other proposed changes by the National's to New Zealand's immigration policy included changes to investment requirements and changes to the english requirements for business investors looking to move to New Zealand.
