Introducing a new training manual concerning health issues for mentors that work with youth. The name of the book is Promoting Healthy Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors AmongYouth Using Haiku Poetry and Creative Expression: A Training Manual for Mentors written by Dr. Imani Ma’at © released and available to the public on July 1, 2008.  The book provides information on the health issues such as delaying sex, HIV/AIDS, smoking, drinking, drug use, violence, self-esteem, obesity and examples of Haiku and other poetry written about the issues. Workshops have been developed to train mentors in using the manual to hold workshops, and to work directly with youth audiences.

The facilitator provides scientific and social facts about the alarming impact of each health issues on youth in our society. She then presents samples of haiku and other poetry written about each issue.   Participants, after hearing the overview of the health issues and sample poems, are separated into groups that continue to discuss one of the health issues and write their own poetry which they share with the larger group.  The author has conducted several pilot sessions for mentors and youth and they have all received high participant ratings.  The author seeks to identify clients that serve mentors, youth or both who are really committed to the health and well being of our youth.  Schools, churches, and mentoring organizations all serve to benefit from this phenomenal workshop.

The author is a Behavioral Scientist that has worked in this field for over 25 years, teaches as an Assistant Professor in the Master of Public Health Program of Morehouse School of Medicine, Co-Founded a health-focused teen theater group entitled Y.E.S. 4 Health, and has now created this dynamic approach to promoting healthy choices and outcomes for youth around the nation.  She has degrees from Mount Holyoke College, M.I.T, Harvard, and Teacher’s College of Columbia University.
