A Day of Dance - Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Fundraiser

Sept. 10, 2008 - PRLog -- Except for skin cancer, the American Cancer Society lists breast cancer as the number one cancer among women.  About 1 in 8 women, 12% of the population, will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.  What most people don’t know, however, is that men can also develop breast cancer.  While not as common as it is in women an estimated 2,000 new cases are diagnosed in men each year.  Of this number about 450 men die from it annually (American Cancer Society).  Breast Cancer no longer needs to be defined as a silent killer.  Along with the promising research that is taking place, women can learn how to help control the risk factors in their external environment including; food, water, lifestyle (i.e., smoking vs. non-smoking), and weight.  Knowing your risk factor is also helpful which requires talking to the women in your family and knowing your medical history.  In addition, performing monthly breast self-exams, having regular clinical exams and mammograms is critical.  In an effort to be a part of the solution to eradicating breast cancer one Westchester County resident, Kim Jones, has made the commitment to take the proverbial bull by the horns and join the October 4-5th Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  A breast cancer survivor, Kim has pledged to walk 39 miles in 2 days and with a goal to raise $2,000.  Sponsored by the Avon Foundation the purpose of the walk is to assure that medically under-served women and men can get medical care they need and to support research teams in finding a cure.  In pursuit of this goal Kim has partnered with Just Us Women Productions, LLC Wellness Studio to host A Day of Dance fundraiser on Saturday, September 20th.  A Day of Dance fundraiser begins at 9:30AM with Belly Dancing lessons and continues throughout the day with Zumba Dance Fitness and Hip-Hop lessons.  There will be giveaways, light refreshments and health education literature distributed.  The Wellness Studio is located at 364 North Avenue, Studio 101, New Rochelle, NY.  Pre-registration for each class is required to confirm your space.  To register for one or more classes visit the website at www.justuswomen.org/workshops.aspx or call Kim at 914-522-2777.
