A self taught entrepreneur, the business acumen of Ed Mercer over the years made him taste big successes, and finally become one of the largest builders, land owners and real estate developers in Costa Rica. A philanthropist par excellence, Ed R. Mercer has been of the view that since he spent the first part of life earning (a young millionaire by 27), he shall spend the next half diverting the money towards community development projects and helping others. Mercer’s adopted home; Oscar Arias earned his doctorate from the University of Essex and began his political career as an activist of PLN (Partido de Liberacion Nacinol). He became the minister of national planning and political economy in 1972. In 1979, he was elected general secretary of PLN, finally earning the presidential nomination in 1984. Eventually, he became the President in 1986 and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his plan that called for an immediate ceasefire to all the guerilla wars. A provision was made for the suspension of the outside military, elections, general reduction in armed forces, general amnesty and negotiations between the conflicting parties at the Central American Summit. Under the able guidance of President Oscar Arias Sanchez, Costa Rica donned the role of an active negotiator in the search for peace among the different countries of the region as well as democracy, to top it all.
