Sept. 15, 2008 - PRLog -- With the develop of seat belts, air bags and bicycle helmets, the number of facial injuries and facial fractures seen at regional trauma centers had decreased.  However when they do occur, the types and severity are worse.  Correction of post-traumatic facial injuries involving fractures of the jaws (maxilla and mandible), cheek bones (zygoma) and orbits are complicated surgical procedures.  Surgical reconstruction of these injuries involve more that just the re-alignment of the teeth with wires and placement of plates and screws.  In a majority of the events there is concomitant injuries involving the soft tissues of the face such as the: lips, cheeks, eyelids and eyebrows, ears and forehead.

When an accident does occur, family members are often confused and ignorant as to which surgical specialist they should be request in the emergency room.  The average person probably associates plastic surgeons and plastic surgery with cosmetic surgical procedures such as: Facelifts, Tummy Tucks, Breast Augmentation and Liposuction.  However plastic surgeons have a unique blend of training that involves both reconstructive as well as cosmetic Surgery.  Dr. Stephen A. Chidyllo is a New Jersey, board certified plastic surgeon that is fully trained in both Plastic Surgery and Dentistry.  Dr. Chidyllo has completed fellowship training in the fields of Craniofacial and Maxillofacial surgery after completing his plastic surgery residency.  He is in private practice in Monmouth County New Jersey and performs a majority of his facial reconstruction cases at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, which is the regional trauma center for central New Jersey.    For additional information on Dr. Chidyllo:  www.plasticsurgerynewjersey.org

Dr. Chidyllo feels that these complicated craniomaxillofacial injuries and fractures should be most effectively treated by a team approach involving a Plastic Surgeon trained in the techniques of craniofacial surgery, along with an ophthalmologist and/or neurosurgeon if needed. Dr. Chidyllo’s prior training in the field of dentistry has provided him with the foundation needed to appreciate the delicate relationship between the upper and lower teeth (maxilla and mandible).  Dr. Chidyllo completed his plastic surgical residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Cook County Hospitals.  He states that he has seen the worse and most complicated injuries during his years of Cook County Hospital and that his fellowship training in the field of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery was the “icing on the cake”.  Dr. Stephen Chidyllo states that “I would rather have an over trained surgeon treating my family, rather than a minimally trained one” in this way if some unexpected complication or event were to occur during the surgical procedure, the surgeon would have had the experience and expertise to manage this issue. “ God forbid if one of my family members was in an accident", states Dr. Chidyllo, I would request that the emergency room doctor consult a plastic surgeon over any other specialist.  Dr. Chidyllo feels that a patient requires a board certified plastic surgeon to treat any concomitant soft tissue facial injuries and scars concerning the lips, cheeks, eyelids and eyebrows, ears and forehead.  He also states that patients with complicated facial trauma and fractures require a plastic surgeon trained in the fields of craniofacial surgical techniques to reconstruct all of the injured facial components successfully.

Traumatic facial injuries do not only affect and change the way a person looks, but these injuries affect the way a person “looks at himself or herself”.  Fractures and injuries of the jaws and facial soft tissues (lips, cheeks, etc.) can compromise a person’s ability to chew and speak correctly.  Fractures of a person’s orbital bones and eyelids can change a person’s vision or ability to close their eyelids.  Fractures of the nasal bones affect both a persons appearance as well as change their ability of breathing, smell and taste.  The physical and psychological trauma associated with a complicated facial injury can have lasting affects on a patient for years to come.  Dr. Chidyllo recently treated a female horse trainer who was kicked in the face by a horse over a year prior.  The accident had a negative impact on her whole life.  The facial reconstruction performed by Dr. Chidyllo helped in erasing and correcting her psychological and physical pain.  To view the complete story on video view the testimonial page on: www.plasticsurgerynewjersey.org
