DANA POINT, CALIFORNIA— If the box office receipts are any indication, it would seem that Robert Downey, Jr., has finally overcome his lifelong struggle with alcohol and drug addiction and is back on top. His latest film, Tropic Thunder, directed by and featuring Ben Stiller, holds the top slot for the second consecutive week this week. In May 2008, the debut of Iron Man, directed by Jon Fauvreau, featured Downey in the lead role of Tony Stark a playboy struggling with alcoholism that becomes the anti-hero Iron Man.  So far Iron Man has taken in an impressive $570.6 million since its release. According to the L.A. Times, Fauvreau is already at work on developing Iron Man 2 for which Downey is expected to once again assume the lead role of Tony Stark.  He's also being considered for Sherlock Holmes in the new Guy Ritchie film.

It's been over a decade since Robert Downey, Jr., has been a commanding presence in major studio films. In 1992, his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor but only a few years later, his problems with Heroin and Cocaine addiction had taken precedence. Between 1996 and 2001, Downey was arrested several times on drug-related charges and as a result, he attempted several drug treatment programs without success.  In between his unsuccessful attempts to kick his drug habits, Downey signed on with the cast of Ali McBeal and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a mini-series. Another arrest resulted in his character being written off and it was then that Downey attempted drug rehab one more time.

Since 2001, Downey has continued to make his climb back up the Hollywood ladder through independent films and supporting roles. Downey's triumphant return is a result of hard work and tenacity in overcoming the crippling disease of addiction.
