Aug. 11, 2008 - PRLog -- As chair of this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life committee, I would like to thank residents of the Roaring Fork Valley for their overwhelming generosity and support. 51 teams and over 500 team members participated in this year’s event, raising more than $155,000 for research, education, advocacy and service programs. This outstanding show of support proves that the people in our valley are truly committed to the fight against cancer.
A special thanks to the many Relay For Life volunteers who worked to make this event a success. The Relay For Life committee did an outstanding job of putting the event together. Committee members are Betty Bradley, Jenn Flentge, Natasha Lucero, Karen Jewell, Betsy Stewart, Susie Stein, Donni Cochran, Ann Morris, Laura Edgar, Frank Rudecoff, Ann Keeney, Paul Hilts, Ann Broadhurst, Linda Clark, Susan Faulkner, Linda Hoffman, Candy Holgate, Marianne Kipper, Nellie LaJoy, and Libby Walker.
We also appreciate the generosity of this year’s sponsors. Relay For Life would not be possible without them. Many of our 32 corporate sponsors were present this year with teams to show their continued support – Alpine Bank, Ace Hardware, Alpine Animal Hospital, American National Bank, Aspen Valley Hospital, Basalt Realty, KSPN, Pour House, Sopris Surfers, Total Merchant Services, Valley Lumber, Valley View Hospital, and Vectra Bank. Stewart Custom Builders generously donated prop construction and manpower throughout the Relay event.
The Opening Ceremonies were made possible with the help of the Carbondale Boy Scout Troop with their Flag Ceremony, Bruce Gledhill of the Church at Redstone who lead us in the invocation, and local Mayors Bruce Christenson, Leroy Duroux, Doug “Merc” Mercatoris, and Carbondale Trustee Ed Cortez as guest speakers and team judges.
Guests Wayne Lilyestrom PhD of Fort Collins and John Palmer of Carbondale shared their stories of fighting cancer at the Luminaria Ceremony. KC Johnson and the Earthbeat Summer Choir Staff along with Maureen Hinkle shared music during this moving ceremony.
The Lion’s Club of Basalt and the Pour House of Carbondale graciously provided a hot breakfast for all participants before we headed home at 7:30am.
We would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Town of Carbondale, the District Court Work Program, the Carbondale Middle School, and the RE-1 School District for helping us put on a great event again this year.
There are so many people and organizations to thank – it takes a community to fight cancer and raise over $155,000, and we couldn’t do it without everyone’s help.
Sincerely,
Julia Spencer, 2008 Event Chair
