July 22, 2008 - PRLog -- Attention Pool Owners and Managers:

As you are undoubtedly aware, the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act was signed into law last December (2007).    This law requires each swimming pool or spa drain cover manufactured, distributed, or entered into commerce in the United States to conform to specified entrapment protection standards accredited by the American National Standards Institute and published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Our company has available an unblockable stainless steel main drain anti-vortex plate that meets the requirements of this law.  This means you do NOT need to change to dual drains.  You do NOT need to tear up your pool floor.

You have 8 basic choices for your pools and spas with single drains to bring them into compliance by December 19, 2008:
(I) safety vacuum release system
(ii) suction-limiting vent system
(iii) gravity drainage system
(iv) automatic pump shut-off system
(v) drain disablement
(vi) other systems- any other system determined by the commission to be equally effective as, or better
(vii) put in dual drains (tear up floor of pool)
(vii) install an unblockable stainless steel main drain anti-vortex plate

The an unblockable stainless steel main drain anti-vortex plate is by far the most economical and legal alternative.  An unblockabale drain  must  be a minimum 18” x 24”  or  29” diagonal (CPSC)).

The newly designed  Anti-Vortex Cover has a gradual slope, which decreases the tripping hazard found in traditional anti-vortex covers. Our stainless steel, main drain anti-vortex plates enhance the safety of main drains and sumps in swimming pools. Like the clamp style plates, these plates can prevent many objects from being drawn into the line. Most importantly, they can help ensure that swimmers do not become trapped below the pool’s surface by the powerful suction generated by the recirculation system.   It is only 1” high with a gradual slope.

Tools required to install this are a hammer drill, carbide tip drill bit, and screwdriver.  You may need to check with an electrician to properly ground covers to meet state or local electrical codes.

This cover meets the AMSE/ANSI unblockable drain standard for pools.
