Rare Hip Replacement Surgery of Cancer Patient Performed at Moolchand

July 4, 2008 - PRLog -- Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi - 84 years old heart patient, Nirmal Singhal was suffering from large cell cancer of the lung, and was in a critical position when she reached Moolchand. Dr. J S Arora, Senior Consultant–Moolchand Orthopedics Hospital, found that the metastasis (cancer) had spread to her hip causing fracture and recommended a hip replacement. But due to several complications in her case, giving anaesthesia for the surgery became challenging. Dr. Vijay Langar, Aneasthetist at Moolchand Medcity, studied her case and successfully managed to give her anaesthesia through the spine.

Her spine was operated 35 years ago, which caused spondylosis of the spine, thereby making it difficult for the doctors to operate as spinal anesthesia became a distinct probability, which was a pre-requisite for the hip replacement surgery. Thanking the doctors of Moolchand, her husband says, “We visited several city hospitals for hip joint replacement surgery. All of them refused as it was a complicated case with her being a cardiac patient and had been operated before on the spine. But it was Moolchand which proved its credential by performing this surgery.”

Dr Vijay Langar, Consultant-Moolchand Medcity, says, “After carefully studying the case, we decided to go ahead with the spinal anaesthesia, because giving it through the heart was not safe due to her weak cardiac condition. She was highly anaemic with a low haemoglobin count of just 6%, thereby making the case even more complicated. We managed to insert a catheter into the spine and through this anaesthesia was administered and monitored in the patient.”

His son flew down especially from US, after consulting the doctors there and finding no ray of hope for her mother. He says, “While other hospitals were apprehensive and thought it was high risk case, Moolchand is the one which went ahead and saved her life. Even the doctors in US thought that it was too complicated a case to handle.”

The hip replacement was successfully done by Dr. J S Arora, Senior Consultant–Moolchand Orthopedics Hospital. He says, “It is the excellent team work and well equipped technology at Moolchand which enabled us to successfully perform surgery on such a difficult case. The patient stood on her own within seven days of the operation, a thing which none of her family members believed could happen.”
