Top Tennis Pro Publishes New Coaching Book

COACHING MASTERY, David’s new book, takes his “Advanced Foundation,” (the cornerstone of his teaching philosophy that has made his first book TENNIS MASTERY both a top seller as well as an internationally acclaimed instructional manual), and shares the secrets to his success as one of the all-time most successful high school team coaches in the U.S.

“Following in my father’s footsteps, I learned from one of the finest coaches in the country,” Dave said of his father Bruce Smith. Together, the two Smith’s garnered one of the finest sporting records of all time. Winning over 650 regional wins against only 9 losses over a 22 year period, Dave and Bruce established one of the most winning high school teams in the country. The La Quinta High School boy’s tennis team at one time won 398 consecutive team victories, and if you tabulate all the pre-season and post season matches, (state competitions and an always tough pre-season schedule against larger schools to make their teams play tougher), the “Aztecs” racked up over 1000 team victories against fewer than 75 losses. Dave took over for his father in 1984 after his father died of a heart attack and not only continued his winning ways at LaQuinta, but he duplicated nearly identical results in Arizona when he moved there for his wife to do her pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. At Agua Fria high school in Goodyear, (a few miles outside of Phoenix), Dave racked up a boys and girl’s tennis record of over 300 regional wins against 19 losses over the seven-year period he taught there.

“The formula for developing championship teams doesn’t change based on location,” Smith said of his success in both states. In fact, Smith, a champion of a “no-cut” philosophy of keeping kids on his teams, averaged over 40 kids on his teams each year.

Smith has seen where too many coaches simply cut prospective players because they didn’t understand how to optimize potential success through maintaining larger teams. His new book, Coaching Mastery was, among other things, written to help the typical high school coach not only effectively and efficiently coach large numbers of players, but also how to attract those large numbers to their program.

“I can’t tell you how many coaches could only field a handful of players, only to ask how I was able to attract so many players to my own teams,” Smith explained. I analyzed the areas that most coaches did not know about in how to attract—then coach—large numbers of players. I wanted to share the elements that made my father before me, and my own programs years later, so successful.

Coaching Mastery is also written for the typical “tennis parent”.

“I would see parents tossing balls to their kids in hopes that they would somehow acquire tennis skills through simply attrition…as if tossing 10,000 balls would somehow produce a skilled tennis player,” Smith said. “Unfortunately, patterns learned at an early age will become ingrained for a lifetime. This results in kids who stagnate far below their potential in most cases.” Smith has outlined a clear ‘blueprint’ that parents, like coaches, can use to train every age of beginner; from little kids to adults to senior players in their golden years.

“There is a correlation to learning not just skilled technique, but the proper learning tools, progressions and drills that people should follow which results in not just continued improvement over time, but giving the player the best opportunity to take tennis to the highest level their hearts desire,” Smith explained.

Coaching Mastery is also the first real publication to address how to take a child to the professional ranks.

“The few books addressing kid’s tennis generally only focus on fun and don’t provide a true resource for parents and coaches alike to give kids the right foundation to have any chance at becoming a top college player and/or tour professional. The issue of fun has been manipulated to basically be a ‘hit and giggle’ experience for kids. Many pros feel if they make tennis too challenging, the kids will quit. Not only is this completely false for most kids, this philosophy will, in the end, attract kids who don’t want to be challenged and don’t want to reach high levels of skilled achievement,” Smith said. “It comes as no surprise that the United States is not the leader in producing top tennis professionals. Tennis has been marketed to attract those with short attention spans or want instant gratification,” Smith added, alluding to the slogan for USTA’s Tennis Welcome Centers: “Learn Tennis Fast.”

“While rudimentary tennis can be learned rather quickly, not only are such methods generally elementary, they are responsible for producing millions of mediocre tennis players in the U.S.”

Coaching Mastery addresses these issues as well as teach over 75 drills that are not only productive and unique, but follow the proper sequence of learning that insures that every single student of Smith’s “Advanced Foundation” will reach their true tennis potential…a potential based on a player’s athleticism, desire, and opportunity.
