Not-So-Typical Entertainment Executive Makes Advocating for Women's Issues Top Priority

Sophie Mokhtari's novel provides a voice that brings hope to all who want to overcome and succeed with strength and courage. Writers of the Round Table Press will release “China Girl: A Daughter’s Journey” in August.

June 5, 2008 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES – Try working a demanding 55+ hour-a-week job as an executive at NBC Universal and writing your first novel in just a year’s time. To say that Sophie Mokhtari’s passion to advocate for women’s issues has taken over her life, both personally and professionally, is accurate. Sparked by personal experiences, Mokhtari hopes her first novel provides a voice for those who have suffered and to bring hope to all who want to overcome and succeed with strength and courage. The novel is written from her heart with the intension of exposing issues that have buried within the Asian cultures for centuries. Writers of the Round Table Press will release “China Girl: A Daughter’s Journey” in August. http://www.chinagirlbook.com

“I actually think that Sophie has thrived because of all the adversity she faced when she was younger,” said Publisher Corey Blake. “It made her a strong, independent woman. The hungry wolf makes the best hunter, and Sophie had a rough upbringing that made her want more for herself and for her daughter.”

Being a women’s issues advocate comes naturally to Mokhtari. She has been an active participant in many organizations, including the Young Development Board of National Safe Place, Special Olympics of Southern California, the Girl Scouts, the Venice Family Clinic, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in L.A. She is the recipient of GE’s Ovation Award for Demonstrating Extraordinary Imagination and the Ovation Award for Team Building.

As part of her current advocacy initiatives, Mokhtari has created a list of useful resources on her website which offers “places where you can go when you need help or when you want to offer help to others in need!” Resources include the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Alcoholics Anonymous, Rape Abuse Incest National Network, Planned Parenthood, and the National Alliance on Mental Health. Her journal, www.chinagirlbook.com, offers inspiration and a voice that resonates among her audience, regardless of their age, culture, or background.

Why is Mokhtari’s work so important today?

“Women have amazing characteristics of intuition and nurturing that this world needs more of, yet Society today still paints women in a light that leaves so many of them feeling less confident than they should,” said Blake. “Empower more women and you’ll find that they will grow communities and organizations that will care for and heal the world far more than any military campaign ever could. Sophie is standing up to have that conversation and to empower more women towards a better tomorrow.”

About Sophie Mokhtari
Born in Hong Kong, Mokhtari and her family immigrated to the United States at an early age. She was shuttled around and lived in many cities, and adjusting to life in America was difficult at times. To escape the harshness of her reality, she found solace at her local library, reading volumes of fairytales, books of adventure, and stories about foreign countries.

After graduating from the University of Delaware with a BA in International Relations, she drove across the country to Los Angeles with just a few hundred dollars in her pocket and two suitcases of belongings – and a young man who later became her husband. After working as a travel agent for the largest agency in the U.S., and enjoying the perk of being able to travel and explore 27 countries, she moved on to NBC Universal where today she is director of logistics.
