Burma Global Action Network Urges Efficient Aid For The Humanitarian Crisis In Burma

(Over 100,000 Dead With Mainstream Aid Organizations Unable To Reach Affected Areas)

May 8, 2008 - PRLog -- Hurricane Nargis hit the coast of Burma on the 3rd of May 2008. It is estimated that over 100,000 people have died, with the death toll set to rise dramatically as the most inaccessible and hardest hit areas are yet to be reached.

It is feared that over 1.5 million people have been left homeless as tidal surges over 15 meters swept inland carrying away all that was in its path. There have been reports of entire villages left without food, shelter and clean drinking water nearly 5 days after the Cyclone.

With the threat of malaria, dengue fever, cholera and dysentery on the rise it is imperative that swift action is taken to prevent the outbreak of these diseases turning this already grave humanitarian crisis to epic proportions.

There are fears that with the lethargic reaction from the authorities and the hindrance in allowing International Aid to reach those in the most desperate need the situation will deteriorate swiftly; as a result it is imperative to act as quickly as possible.

Burma Global Action Network (BGAN), a global internet activism organization is working closely with a number of organizations that are currently providing aid to those who need it the most.  BGAN is working hard to ensure that there is up to the minute information available as soon as possible through the list of organizations working inside the country, how to support them, and the latest exclusive information trickling out of the country.

Through BGAN’s wide range of networks, there are many resources available through www.burma-network.org and the group formed on the social network Facebook ‘Support The Relief Efforts For Burma (Myanmar) Cyclone Disaster Victims’ (with almost 3,000 members strong within 3 days since it was formed) for anyone around the world to offer help in many different ways.  BGAN urges not to let this regime stop aid to those in need and should find any credible channel to get aid to the suffering people of Burma.

It is critical that the regime allow all international assistance in to the affected areas immediately. The United States has offered to help and the regime must accept. Hundred's of thousands of people are affected.  The people in Burma are struggling to find shelter, medical treatment, clean water, food and the regime is in total disarray.  BGAN call on the people around the world to step in and help in anyway they can.
