May 1, 2008 - PRLog -- San Francisco, CA  Richard Dudum, author of "What Your Mother Never Told You - A Survival Guide For Teenage Girls" says that Miley Cyrus is doing the right thing to admit that she is "embarrassed" by the photo done for Vanity Fair Magazine.

Dudum, whose book is written for teen girls in language they can understand and relate to, says, "Girls should accurately portray themselves. They need to understand that what they do, say, how they act, and what they wear communicates a message. The girls need to think about who they are, who they want to be, and how they want to be perceived and remembered. They need to anticipate and avoid people, places and situations that can put them or their reputations in harms way and at risk."

"Miley is perceived as a good example, and her parents have made a conscious effort to be actively involved, oversee and guide her path. They might have been swayed by the Vanity Fair opportunity, but they won't make that mistake again."

Dudum's teen self-help book provides useful tools and strategies to empower teenage girls to be responsible for their decisions and actions.

While Dudum does not hold fifteen year old Miley responsible for this misstep, he was concerned with her comment about the photograph and photographer Annie Leibovitz. "Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie."

Dudum, who is the father of two teenage daughters, wants girls to know how to say "NO" "I've devoted an entire chapter in my book to the concept of saying "NO" which is the most important word in the dictionary for teenage girls," Dudum states. "Both Miley and her parents should have simply said "NO." This incident is an excellent opportunity to help Miley and her fans learn the importance of this simple rule."

While some parents are raising their eyebrows over the approach and taboo subjects discussed in Dudum's book, including subject like oral sex and teaching the kids how to drink safely if they make the decision to drink, the overwhelming majority of readers agree that the issues need to be addressed, and Dudum's approach works. Parents are talking, teens are reading, and the book has opened the door to communication on the most sensitive issues facing our teenage girls today. That's what it's all about.

"Controversy creates communication. Pretending things aren't happening to your teenage girls is asking for trouble," says Dudum. "Start talking before it's too late."
