April 21, 2008 - PRLog -- Denver, CO – Despite losing her hearing at the age of 18 months from roseola infantum, Marlee Beth Matlin leads an incredible life, offering inspiration for people living with and without a disability.  Matlin is currently facing her most public challenge as a contestant on the sixth season of the hit TV series “Dancing with the Stars”.  The fast-paced, high-skill dancing is already extremely challenging, but Matlin takes the contest to a new level by dancing without hearing the music in front of millions of viewers.  Disaboom, the premiere online community for people with disabilities, talked with the actress and author Matlin, about overcoming obstacles, her can-do attitude and her future goals.  The full interview is available by visiting:

Rather than focus on her disability, Matlin channels all her energy into her many abilities.  At the age of seven, Matlin jump started her acting career starring as Dorothy in a children’s theatre company’s recreation of the “Wizard of Oz.”  In her film debut at the age of 21, she received the Academy Award for best actress for the movie “Children of a Lesser God”.   She is currently married with four kids and writes children’s books.

“Look into your heart and just follow what it tells you to do,” said Matlin.  “Don’t let anyone tell you can’t do something, and if you really find it hard, just find another way to do it.”

Visitors to www.disaboom.com can read the entire interview with Matlin, where she discusses the challenges of learning dance sequences for “Dancing with the Stars,” her mindset before dancing in front of an audience and her future plans.  The interview is located on Disaboom’s Living section under TV.

“It is truly a pleasure to feature someone as accomplished and determined as Marlee Matlin,” said Dr. Glen House, founder of Disaboom.  “She is a reminder to everyone that limitations are merely perception.”
