Wood and Wood signage on the new Arsenal Emirates Stadium

News and information on the wood and wood sign making and installation for the Arsenal Emirates Stadium

April 1, 2008 - PRLog -- Wood&Wood Signs initially started work with HOK SVE on the external sign package for the new Emirates Stadium in 2004. We were then appointed as signage contractor on a design and build basis by Sir Robert McAlpine to translate the design intent into 3D signs. In Spring 2006, we commenced manufacture of the signs. The signage is made up of three sign types, the ‘Emirates Stadium’ letters, Emirates logo and the Arsenal shield.

Although large and imposing, the ‘Emirates Stadium’ letters at 1.4m and Emirates logo, overall dimensions of 4.1m x 3.3m, were straightforward to manufacture.
Each character is built-up from descaled stainless steel, polyester powder coated to corporate colours and internally illuminated with red LEDs through red acrylic faces.
The most challenging element of the project for Wood&Wood Signs was the 4 Arsenal shields. Initially designed to be 6m x 5m and internally illuminated, they were envisaged as ‘flex-face’ signs. As the project progressed the signs grew to 8m x 6.5m with external illumination. It also became imperative that the signs be manufactured
with no visible material joints. Wood&Wood Signs rose to the challenge and embarked on a major research initiative, which identified a European supplier capable of delivering a lightweight rigid polycarbonate/GRP substrate in lengths up to 14m with a maximum
width of 3m.
The design of the club badge meant we could utilise the central joint to enhance the different shades of red on the two halves of the shield and to manufacture the shield in just two pieces. The built-up letters and cannon are a combination of 2mm descaled stainless steel and 3mm aluminium.

Dedicated remote spotlights illuminate the shields and have been designed to keep
the colours true. The end result is a truly stunning set of signs that create a visual impact in keeping with this magnificent state-of-the-art stadium.
