Eyran Records Releases Exclusive Digital-Only Single, Somthin’ N’You

Jan. 17, 2008 - PRLog -- Boston, MA,  – Eyran Records releases a digital-only single by internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Eyran Katsenelenbogen and body percussionist Jimmy Elcock.  The single, titled Somthin’ N’You, is a funky improvisational dialogue based on the famous theme from Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition.  

This jazz-meets-classical-meets-hip hop interpretation is also the title-track from their album scheduled for release this spring.  Katsenelenbogen improvises freely and lyrically on the theme while Elcock achieves a full range of percussion timbres using only his body as an instrument.

Another version of this piece will also appear on Katsenelenbogen’s tenth solo piano CD 88 Fingers.  It has also been performed in duet with Russian classical pianist Andrei Ivanovitch during their recent German tour, titled Pictures At An Exhibition: Classical Meets Jazz.

About Eyran Katsenelenbogen:
In addition to this release, Eyran Katsenelenbogen is celebrating this year the release of his 10th solo piano CD 88 Fingers. The CD includes Eyran’s interpretation of beloved songs such as September Song (Weill) and Those Were The Days (Raskin), as well as his own improvised solo version of the Pictures At An Exhibition  theme.

The original idea of interpreting Mussorgsky’s masterpiece integrating classical and jazz styles was conceived by German producer Gerhard Hummer, who produced and managed Eyran’s European tour in October 2007. In the Pictures At An Exhibition: Classical Meets Jazz tour, Eyran collaborated with Russian classical pianist Andrei Ivanovitch. The press hailed their groundbreaking performance, calling it “An absolute sensation in the history of concert events.”

Eyran is also featured as accompanist for vocalists Patrice Monahan and Hildy Grossman on two new CDs scheduled for release in 2008. In May, the CD Wait For Me, Baby with vocalist Hildy Grossman will be launched with a CD release concert at Boston’s Sculler’s jazz club.

Eyran is a recipient of the ASCAP Plus Award for the years 2002 – 2007. His upcoming release 88 Fingers was made possible with funding from New England Conservatory.


About Jimmy Elcock:
Born in Rockville Centre, New York, and raised just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, Jimmy has been interested in music his entire life.  Sparked by his grandmother’s blues-piano playing at an early age, Jimmy began playing the piano at age 10, and picked up the drums at age 13.

Jimmy has been studying jazz at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School since 2002.  Currently, he studies piano with Eryan Katsenelenbogen, and jazz drum set with Gary Fieldman.  At the Conservatory, he has also collaborated with faculty and students such as Jeremy Udden, Rick McLaughlin, Adam Larrabee, Bo Winiker, David McTiernan, Oliver Watkinson, Dan Glaude, Dave Neves and many more.

In addition to his musical activities at NEC, Jimmy has been also studying with drummer Kenwood Dennard of Berklee College of Music. In September, he will enter the Music Industries Program at the College of Music & Fine Arts at Loyola University in New Orleans.
