Oct. 31, 2007 - PRLog -- ActiveState Software Inc., a leading provider of professional development tools, released Open Komodo, an open source platform for building development environments based on the award-winning Komodo® IDE, a multi-platform, multi-language IDE for dynamic languages and Ajax technologies. Starting today, developers can download and use Open Komodo, the open-sourced code base from Komodo® Edit, a free multi-language editor for dynamic languages based on Komodo IDE.

Open Komodo is built using web-based technologies and is focused on development using dynamic languages, which are a vital part of the Internet infrastructure. Open Komodo is an environment that developers can shape using the technologies they use daily.

The Open Komodo website details how developers can begin using Open Komodo and get involved with the project, from helping create community, to improving the source code, to building new web development tools using Open Komodo.

Inspired by the open web movement and the need for developer tools in the open web technology stack, ActiveState is initiating a project on the Open Komodo platform, codenamed Komodo Snapdragon. Komodo Snapdragon aims to be a full-featured open-source web development tool, built in collaboration with the open source community, and integrated with Firefox®, Mozilla’s free, open source web browser.

Mark Finkle, Platform Evangelist at Mozilla Corporation, had this to say on his blog: "[The Open Komodo] project will provide some great open source code to the Mozilla platform for development tools. This is an area that many Mozilla developers feel is lacking and has been a much talked about issue for the new MozPad group as well. I look forward to a strong community forming around the project and using the code base to create many great developer tools."

“Creating tools that support the open web is a natural progression for us as open source contributors and supporters,” said Shane Caraveo, Komodo Lead at ActiveState. “We're excited to begin making concrete contributions to the open web with the support of the open source community and to enable others to do likewise.”

Open Komodo is entirely open source and licensed under the same terms as Firefox: Mozilla Public License (MPL), GNU General Public License (GPL), and GNU Lesser Public License (LGPL).
