Aug. 17, 2007 - PRLog -- As in many urban developments, communal facilities for young children are often lacking, but thanks to the determination of an active tenants association, local councillor for the Haverstock ward in Camden, Syed Hoque has officially opened a brand new childrens’ play area at Maitland Park in Gospel Oak.

The three tower blocks on the estate house 508 families, many with young children, but there were no facilities for the young people other than an old set of swings at the back of a car park.  The tenants association surveyed the residents to find out what they really wanted, and one of the main priorities was to have play facilities on site for the younger residents.

The tenants association, working closely with Camden Council, approached environmental regeneration charity Groundwork, and a determined team was created.  The Council and Groundwork worked together to raise funding for the project which included financial support from the London Marathon Trust as well as the council's own funds.  Groundwork, using their experience in community projects, developed designs for the play area that would provide an exciting and challenging facility.

Groundwork’s development director, Wendy Baverstock commented: “Our job was made easier thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of the Maitland Park residents and the support of Camden Council. Under the leadership of Carol Wang, the residents were involved from the start of the project to make sure the playground would meet the needs of those it was designed for.  It's helped to bring a real spirit to the area, with even the children getting involved, going through the brochures and catalogues.  They actively chose Monster Play equipment, and as the company also offered the best value, they were awarded the contract.”

Commissioning and installation went very smoothly, and since opening in May, the area has now become a focal point for mums and their toddlers.  A community gardener will be provided by Groundwork to show and teach the children how to plant some shrubs and flowers.  There will also be a children's planting day in the playgrounds during the autumn half term to encourage the children to respect and care for their new play areas.

“Our residents cover a wide range of ethnic groups, and social cohesion is so important for a happy community.” commented  Carol Wang, chair of the Tenants Association. “Since the new play area opened, the toddlers now have somewhere to have fun, and it’s a pleasure to hear the squeals of delight as they clamber over the climbing frame or play on the swings.  But more than that, it gives mums the opportunity to meet and chat, so it’s been a great success from everybody’s points of view.  Seeing the end result has taught me never to lose sight of long term goals, and with help and support from a good team, you really can achieve success.”
